Hazardous areas

Explosive-atmosphere safety depends on more than an “Ex” label. Understand how releases and ventilation shape zones, how equipment markings communicate protection, and how installation and maintenance preserve the certified design.

Fuel, oxygen and effective ignition must coincide

A hazardous area is a place where special precautions may be required because a flammable gas, vapour, mist or combustible dust can form an explosive atmosphere. The safest strategy starts with preventing or controlling release, then ventilation and detection, ignition control, suitable equipment and disciplined work practices.

Zone 0 can occur inside process equipment or enclosed spaces where a flammable gas atmosphere is continuously or frequently present.

Area classification inputs

The drawing is the result of an engineering assessment

Do not infer a zone from appearance alone. Classification considers the substance, source of release, release frequency, ventilation, congestion, elevation, openings and the way gas may travel or collect.

Substance properties

Flammability limits, relative density, ignition temperature, flash point and release state influence behaviour and equipment requirements.

Source and grade of release

Normal vents, seals, sampling points, drains, flanges and abnormal leakage scenarios do not have the same expected frequency.

Ventilation

Availability, effectiveness and air movement affect dilution, persistence and the extent of an explosive atmosphere.

Geometry and environment

Pits, trenches, roofs, walls, modules, prevailing wind and heavier- or lighter-than-air behaviour change accumulation.

Field rule: use the current approved hazardous-area classification drawing and dossier. A painted line, old sign or nearby item of equipment is not a substitute.

The equipment uses one or more recognised protection concepts for an explosive atmosphere. This symbol is only the start of the marking.

Matching equipment to the area

Five layers must agree

An item can carry an Ex marking and still be unsuitable for a particular location, substance, ambient condition or installation arrangement.

  1. AREA

    Zone and required EPL

    Confirm the classification and protection level required at the exact equipment location.

  2. GAS

    Equipment group

    Match the marked gas group to the substance identified by the area documentation.

  3. TEMP

    Temperature class

    Confirm the permitted surface temperature is below the relevant ignition temperature with required margin and conditions.

  4. AMBIENT

    Marked ambient range

    Check actual environment, process heat, solar loading and enclosure conditions against the certification.

  5. CERT

    Certificate conditions

    Review suffixes, special conditions, approved accessories, glands, barriers, mounting and maintenance requirements.

Protection concepts

Different methods prevent ignition differently

The marking and certificate define the construction and permitted application. Maintenance must preserve the specific protection method rather than treating all Ex equipment alike.

Intrinsic safety

Limits electrical and thermal energy in the circuit under defined normal and fault conditions.

Apparatus, barriers, cables, earthing and entity parameters form a system.

Flameproof enclosure

Contains an internal explosion and prevents flame transmission to the surrounding atmosphere.

Flamepaths, threads, fasteners, entries and enclosure integrity are critical.

Increased safety

Uses construction measures that avoid arcs, sparks and excessive temperatures in specified service.

Terminations, clearances, torque, ingress protection and loading matter.
Ex p

Pressurisation

Maintains protective gas conditions to prevent the external atmosphere entering an enclosure.

Purge sequence, pressure monitoring and loss-of-pressure action matter.
Ex m

Encapsulation

Encloses ignition-capable parts in a compound so the explosive atmosphere cannot reach them.

Cracking, damage, temperature and certificate-defined repair limits matter.
Ex n

Type of protection “n”

Uses defined construction techniques for equipment intended for specified lower-risk gas applications.

Subtype, zone, EPL and certificate details must be checked carefully.
Installation integrity

Certification is preserved by the complete installation

Enclosure, cable entry, wiring system, accessory, environmental seal and maintenance condition all contribute to protection.

ENTRY

Glands, adaptors and stopping plugs

Confirm thread form, engagement, cable compatibility, sealing, certification and permitted adaptor arrangement.

IS

Intrinsic-safety system

Confirm associated apparatus, entity parameters, cable capacitance and inductance, segregation, identification and earthing.

EARTH

Bonding and earthing

Check protective earth, equipotential bonding, screen termination and any dedicated intrinsic-safety earth arrangement.

ENV

Environment and ingress

Check water, corrosion, dust, vibration, UV, ambient temperature, process temperature and mechanical protection.

MOD

Unauthorised modification

Extra holes, substituted fasteners, changed batteries, internal components or non-approved repairs may invalidate protection.

DOC

Traceability

Marking, certificate, serial identity, drawings, inspection record and defect status must remain readable and controlled.

Inspection awareness

The inspection depth changes what can be detected

The approved inspection program defines frequency, grade, access and competency. These three levels illustrate increasing examination depth.

VISUAL

Without access equipment or tools

Finds apparent defects such as missing bolts, obvious damage, open entries or severe corrosion.

CLOSE

With access equipment, usually without opening

Adds defects visible only at closer range, including loose glands, unreadable marking or deteriorated seals.

DETAILED

With tools and possible enclosure opening

Adds defects such as loose terminations, internal damage or incorrect components under controlled conditions.

Stop-work indicators

Stop when the protection story does not add up

Protect the condition, prevent disturbance where required, report the defect and use the authorised escalation path.
